My baby will IYH be starting solids soon.
How much food should I be giving per meal? Is there anything (besides honey, sugar, colorings) that I shouldn't give?
ETA can I introduce water?

It's hard to say an amount. You start and see if baby wants more. It's for 'training' purposes at this age. Don't stress about it. It's hard to overfeed a baby. Go by their cues. You can read up on baby led weaning.
Concept is to give all foods you eat, age appropriately.
So no nuts or grapes that are chocking hazards but if your eating soup and chicken and broccoli, then baby should get that too.

My doctor said to give all food groups, so that's what I gave.
Chicken, eggs, cheese, fish etc

At what point does the goal become to phase out nursing?

Babies don’t need water before 6 months.
Up to a year they shouldn’t have more than an ounce a day.

This isn't necessarily true. Babies do need water if they're outside in the heat.

Input re: water: My LO's pediatrician recommended chamomile tea 1oz in the am and 1oz in the pm for my 2mo old. I live in a very hot climate so if baby gets sweaty she does show signs of increased thirst and I follow that same guideline of 1oz at a time no more than twice a day. Depends on many factors but unless they seem dehydrated no need for water. HOWEVER, once you start solids I believe water becomes necessary in small amts to balance the solid food. Ask pediatrician but I would assume around that same 1oz.

Definitely talk to your pediatrician to see if your baby is showing signs of readiness to eat. Things like sitting unassisted, bringing hands to mouth, etc. my doctor recommended we wait until 6 months. We started giving a little earlier because she was SO eager to eat.
Definitely talk to your ped about how they recommend introducing food. Mine said to just give her what I’m eating in baby safe serving sizes. I do a mix of baby led weaning (big chunks for her to feed herself) and purees because sometimes I need a break from the gagging 😅.
From the research I’ve done; gagging, coughing and funny faces are totally normal as your baby starts to learn to eat.

Introduce allergens one at a time - a few times a day for a few days without other new foods during those days so you can see if there's any reaction

There are no rules anymore aside from honey. And no cows milk until a year. Otherwise I personally avoid stuff very high in sodium or sugar. Like I’ll do plain yogurt. I also avoid very processed food. Use the starting solids app to learn how to serve foods.
