The ironic thing to me is that my grandmother born in 1917 was Malka and went by Molly! Ahead of her time lol |
I've known a few Malka's nicknamed Mali since I was a kid and I'm in my 20s

I was born in the mid-eighties and had a friend Malka who was known among her childhood family only as Mali.

I live in Israel and I know many Malkas who go by Mali.
(Most are Litvish Yeshivish. A few Chasidish.)
A few are in their fifties, so around here this is not a new trend.
