Nighttime musings after tucking the last one into bed

We were snuggling in bed, in the dark, in the night
Bedtime story read, last drinks dispensed, tucked in, Shema said
“Mommy”, she said suddenly “why does the sun have to turn out its light?”
I have so many things still to do; I am not ready for bed

“I need to organize my dolls, and finish brushing one’s hair
I have to finish my coloring; I was in the middle of drawing
I wanted to start my new project I left downstairs on my chair
Gosh, I have so much to do; I wish the day was beginning

I needed to show Esty the briefcase you bought
I wanted to tell Morah that I want a new seat
I wanted to tell my brother I was sorry we fought
She continued her list without missing a beat

The day was all over and she was quite upset
She still had so many things to accomplish and do
So I began to reassure her as she continued to fret
That the next morning all these things she’d have time to get to

She drifted off happily; on her face was a smile
As I got up and stretched and took a look around
From the dishes that waited for me all in a pile
To the laundry heaped up on my bed in a mound

I think of all the things that tonight I’ll still do
The many tasks I need to accomplish, the things to prepare
And I know that whatever I start, I’ll see through
Because maybe the sun’s sleeping, but it’s still daytime here!
