Yes or no?
I would think it's like a shabbat elevator -- it goes by itself and you just get on or off.

You're not doing anything, so I don't see why it would not be permitted.

I don't see why not unless it's the kind that starts running when you step on a mat.

So if it's just an escalator that runs continuously, it's all right?

Unless there's a mar'is ayin problem...
However, I looked in a book called the 39 Melochos by Rabbi David Ribiat who says that "even use of automatic elevators and escalators that run continuously and require absolutely no human intervention, is questionable, because the user's additional weight may cause more electricity to be generated....Yet some poskim permit the use...based on the fact that only electric current (and not lights) is activated, as well as a combination of numerous other mitigating Halachic factors that preclude any Shabbos prohibition."
He goes on to say that those who must rely on this leniency (aged, ill and infirm) must make sure zero human intervention is needed, and are advised to first consult a qualified Rav.
so you're back to square one: clearly Rabbi Ribiat disapproves and would permit only for the aged and sick, but YLOR may disagree with Rabbi Ribiat.

It doesn't sound like a leniency. It sounds like it's okay but he doesn't approve anyway.
