I thought my husband (who is a computer guy) had been backing it up but he hadnt.
The arm is broken.
I have hundreds, if not thousands of pictures of my kids on there, as well as some medium importance documents.
Some of the pix I can re-download from FB, but the rest is lost.
I am in tears

If you have the money, send it to a service like OnTrack. They can often do wonders.

There is something called enclosure , it is used to retrieve info from broken hard drives (ext or internal).

Your husband probably knows more about it

dropped my harddrive last yr. completely broke.
this guy in brooklyn completely rescued all my stuff. charged me bout $100 plus price of new harddrive.
his number is 718.509.9211
fixed my laptop too whn it just completely shut down wouldnt start. like new
depends to what extent it broken. sometimes they are not rescue able 
I know so frustrating....unfortunaltely we only learn to backup once we lose our stuff...know all about it....
