Dr. Luchins gives a lecture about that. I forgot exactly what he said, but it was about our role as "a light onto the nations" and how we're constantly in the spotlight for that - because ppl have higher expectations for "Hashem's chosen people".

The Gemara says that everything happens for the sake of the Jewish people. So maybe the news reflects that.
