I am curious because I don't see any "young" or "new" programmers learning to use the system; it appears that everyone I know working on this system, even the new stuff, thinks they will retire on it.
Anyone program on the AS400 or use it where you work?

I think the AS/400 is a tough spot because IBM really wishes they never made it, so it doesn't get a lot of support. If you look at IBM's history docs for the system, they stop at around 2000, when they renamed/rebranded them. The "problem" with the AS/400 is it's too reliable an too stable. Most of the places it sold into aren't the kind of places that are constantly upgrading to new boxes. That's not what a computer company wants. I've been out of that arena for a while, but that's my impression from working in that space for many years.
If you go to an AS/400 trade show (like COMMON), you aren't going to see a lot of younger people. If they are training, AFAIK, they are training on-the-job after they went to school for another system.

We have it where I work. Most of our programmers are close to a retirement. The younger ones (in their 40th) are all from South America. Maybe they use RPG more there.
