Surely there must be some nice Jewish chapter books meant for kids like my son who are just beyond picture books. I went to our local Jewish book store today (I'm not in a huge community so the selection is limited) and was terribly disappointed. The books they showed me for him were more like for 5th or 6th graders in my opinion. The vocabulary was so sophisticated in some cases that I don't know if he'd understand it even if I read it to him.
Can someone please make some decent recommendations that I can look for online or call a bookstore in NY for?
Thanks!!!

it depends on how well he reads.
These are great http://hachai.com/newsite2012/.....7-10/ large type, spaced out, interesting subject material, with a few drawings.
or a lot of the comic type books that are around

I have the same issue. The pictures books are just too easy while the chapter books are way too hard. Also OOT.

my daughter is going into first grade and there isn't much from the jewish books that she reads...

She does savta simcha, also the chaim walder childrens books which is a story every 2 pages.

mostly she reads amelia bedlia, frog and toad, the bear books, basically level 1-2 books.

I think Savta Simcha is too hard. I am not familiar with the others.

MY first grader really enjoys the Boxcar Children and Swallows and Amazons. Five Children and It was a hit last year.

Your first grader was reading Boxcar Children independently?

They don't publish much in that category because the non-Jewish books for that age are mostly good. (Not the recent ones, maybe, but all the solid classics are good.)
