Ds,age 17 will be visiting canada by car. Does she need a passport? Someone told me that a non-drivers id with a birth certificate is sufficient. Anybody have experience with this?

I've driven with my kids that don't have a passport, just birth certificate. One of my kids went on a trip with camp to Canada, only with birth certificate. But a 17-year-old may be different, I don't know.

The border may be strict and may not be. I got in (and out) with an expired passport more than once, and even a hospital certificate instead of birth certificate for one baby, but YMMV, and they did make me get out of the car and get interrogated for those.

Is your DS going with a group?

From an article published last year on travel to Canada:

Quote:
Proof of Citizenship and Identity

Children under the age of 16 or students under 19 years old traveling with a school or religious organization are exempt from the passport requirement and need only provide a copy or original birth certificate to enter Canada. People of any age who are naturalized American citizens need to bring their naturalization papers with them when visiting Canada, especially if they do not hold a valid American passport.

I believe that once a child turns 16 they need to have a passport, and a birth certificate is no longer sufficient, even if travelling by car.

You can also get an enhanced license or state ID with photo that allows travel to Canada.
