I've held my tongue but I gotta speak now, the more I think about it. The names I chose for my kids were not the names I actually thought I'd call them; they were family names that I was going to use as a base for the fabulous nicknames that I wanted to actually use.
And that's what happened - I had a boy, gave him a proper Jewish name, then promptly proceeded to refer to him as something outlandish.
And this is the education I received: Yes, a small baby and a toddler is incredibly cute referred to by an irrepressible nickname. You don't really get the reference to the given name, however, because it's lost in that incredibly cute nickname. That might be painful to the person's spouse or parent that you are naming the child for.
Also, once the child ages, it's increasingly embarrrasing to be refered to by a Baby Name. It's not kovod to the person he was named after, and it's certainly not gleaning respect if you want him to have any chashivus in the business world.
I would think long and hard before calling a child Moo, Shmoopie, Squooshy, or the like.
