I hate when people say “It’s a small world.” I disagree. It is not a small world. It’s a huge, big, wide world with millions of people. If you meet someone you know, it’s called ‏ ‏.השגחה ‏‏פרטית Anyone agree with me?

It makes more sense when secular people say it. For us it's kind of a given.

The world is large, but the frum world is much smaller.

Your probability of knowing someone in the frum Jewish community is much higher than you knowing someone in Tibet or Afghanistan.

That’s a beautiful way to think about it. I like it.

I guess when I think about “it’s a small world”, to me it means a realization that as vast and as populated as this world truly is, on the level of soul, spiritual connection between people, and with this hashgacha pratis and the Unseen Hand bringing us together - the world really is small. Connection isn’t that hard. People aren’t as far away as we think.

So it’s kind of like what you’re saying but a different angle.

There are plenty of sub-groups (both religious and secular) in which the probability of having a common connection within the group is higher than having a connection with the greater outside world. It would be true for any subculture. Harvard grads, Indian-Americans, British expatriates in Thailand, cardiac surgeons, astronomers, etc.

Because of social media, people can connect with other people wherever they are.
