My 10yo DD started complaining about regular headaches several months ago. For the last 3 or so months the headache has never gone away. She wakes with it and goes to sleep with it but it doesn't wake her at night. The pain is usually light but at times it gets worse. There doesn't seem to be a pattern or any triggers to the pain worsening.

She has been examined my an opthalmologist and everything was perfect.

Neurological assessment didn't show any problems but the neurologist told us to give her magnesium supplements for 3 months. We are now a month and a half into that and it is not making a difference.

MRI showed a small venous drainage anomoly which we have been told by two different specialists has no clinical significance and is not the cause of the headaches.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? What was the outcome? Any other avenues of investigation we should persue?

You're not going to like hearing this but maybe she is stressed.

Do you think it would make sense to discuss with your pediatrician if you should visit an ENT? I know that when I am feeling very dry, even if I don't have a cold or stuffed nose, I get bad headaches. Its not a sinus infection, just irritated nasal passages that can cause mild to severe headaches. It helps to use OTC nasal saline drops, which can be used as often as u want.

Did the neurologist give her a diagnosis at all? My husband gets migraines. One of my kids gets tension headaches that the neurologist said will probably be rediagnosed as migraines when he gets older. I have occipital neuralgia (we think) that I'm currently working on treating.

What is her diagnosis? Different types of headaches should be treated in different ways. Where is the pain stemming from, and does it radiate anywhere else? Is she sensitive to lights, noises, anything else? Do pain meds (tylenol, motrin) bring her any relief? Has the neurologist suggested any other pain meds to try?

It seems like a bit of a cop-out to have her take magnesium for three months while in pain without giving her anything to manage her pain in the meantime. I'm taking magnesium right now and it does diddly squat for me, but at least I've been looking at other options in the meantime. PT helps some people. Acupuncture helps others. It's worth discussing these options with the neurologist to see if any of them are options for the type of headache she seems to have...You might have to push a bit, tell him that you really want to do something else in the meantime while you wait for the magnesium to work, since it's really affecting your daughter's functioning.

If she is constipated that can cause headaches. Or maybe an intolerance to something?

What's her diet like? Does she drink enough water?
I had this with my daughter as well. Non stop headaches. Eye exam was fine. Neurologist said to cut out chocolate and sugar and drink tons of water.
Bh her headaches are more or less gone.
Neurologist said that if headaches don't wake from sleep, don't cause nausea/vomiting, don't cause vision issues, it's usually not serious.

Headache is the most common symptom, followed by seizures and abnormal sensation or movement.

I think its connected to the venous drainage anomoly.

Agree. Did they explain why they believe otherwise?

I used to have headaches. Did u rule out food triggers?
Think chocolate, caffeine, processed baked goods

As a teen I went to a chiropractor which helped tons. I have not gone in years and am much much better. I eat all those triggers I mentioned..

Another reason for sudden onset constant headache is concussion.

Does the headache get worse with reading learning or screentime?
Does it get better with cognitive rest?

I was just going to mention this. I remember my first blinding headache around the age of 5. In my case, it feels like it's concentrated in my frontal sinuses. I've made the rounds to ENTs and neurologists every 5-10 years all of my life, but MRIs and CT scans show no abnormalities. I went through repeated rounds of allergy testing as recently as two years ago, and I'm mildly allergic to tree pollen (like everyone in North America, basically).

The only thing that has ever consistently helped me is chiropractic medicine and accupuncture.

I recently switched chiropractors when mine retired, and my new chiropractor is amazing. She's very medically oriented and reviewed all my CTs, MRIs, etc., to get a better idea of how to help me. Though most insurance companies don't pay for chiropractic treatments, they're usually pretty reasonable (at least compared to other medical services).

If your daughter's doctors don't have any good explanations for her headaches, definitely see if chiropractic treatments help. As an aside, this can also help if the headaches are stress- or tension-related. It's not always the amount or type of stress that can manifest itself physically, but simply our bodies' sensitivity to it. She might not be under undue stress, but her body is responding as if she is.

Hatzlachah!

I would check for strep and lyme. That was the cause for my sons constant headaches.

I agree that it's possible she is stressed about something. Or it could be that she doesn't drink enough and is dehydrated.

Strep, Lyme, celiac, dairy intolerance, sinuses, mold, adrenals, electrolytes, blood sugar, and possibly a bunch of other reasons. Time to stop trusting mainstream medicine will solve this for you and start looking outside the box. Unfortunately.

What does the bloodwork say?

I had two kids with constant headaches. One was diagnosed with Lyme's disease and one with mycoplasma.
