In your experiences, if you've had a child on both (at different times) how would you describe the differences?

Every child reacts differently to different medications. My son got very depressed on ritalin and he was fine on adderal - on the other hand it didn't last enough hours.

Could there be something else going on -- hearing, vision, language processing, sleep issues, social issues, etc

Ritalin is methylphenidate and adderall is amphetamine. Both work to increase dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain but in slightly different ways. Amphetamine is slightly more effective at doing this. Which one is your son on? Adderall may be more effective for him. Also talk with your prescriber about possibly changing to a different formulation that can either last longer or peak at a more helpful time. Jornay PM can be good if hes having trouble getting it together in the mornings. ADHD should also be treated with psychotherapy to help him cope and give hime more insight into how he can best help himself.

As another poster mentioned, is it possible he has some other learning problem?

Also good to keep in mind that ADHD often goes hand in hand with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse so watch for any of those and treat if necessary.
