When someone shares something they went through, they'll often get a response like "How dare you! You're disrespecting those who went through the real thing." The message is that it's not real abuse if you weren't beaten until you bled, not real neglect unless you were in medical danger from starvation, not real depression unless you couldn't get out of bed, not a real health problem if you didn't require long term hospitalization, not a real robbery if there was no gun, etc. None of those are required to meet the definition. When you tell someone that what they've experienced doesn't qualify for the label because it's not the most severe example, you're not helping anyone. And acknowledging that a first degree burn is a real burn doesn't harm burn victims.
