I am a single mother driving from Lakewood to the Lake George area at the end of the summer.
Where can I stop (even sort of) on the way to break up the driving time?

Minnewaska State Park.
Hike the Awosting Falls Trail. Its an easy trail that ends in a beautiful waterfall.

New paltz is exactly halfway and is a cute little
Town to walk around with a Starbucks to refuel

With younger children, we enjoyed Forsyth Nature Center in Kingston (I think it is right off the thruway exit 19). It has a playground, fields, and some animals.
