is it a hug if one person is standing directly in front of someone else and they put their arm around the person in front to pat their back, and the other person pats them on the back in return (on the other side)? for about 3 seconds

Funny question. Hugs don't come with such technical descriptions. But it does sound like a semi hug, cuz hugs are usually with both hands.

It's a caring gesture.

It sounds like an unsure hug. Should I hug them or not?!

its a casual hug. like I'm friendly with you and am saying goodbye, wont see you for awhile, too awkward to actually hug you tightly b/c I dont care about you thAAATT much, but I do still care and want you to know it, so I hug you without actually having body contact cuz that would be too weird.
its also the kind of hug that those who arent really touchy feely types would give close friends or family.

its also the kind of hug I'd give my adult brother. not too much contact but I still love you type of thing.

Sounds like a one-armed hug, but why do you ask?

it is a hug but I agree that it sounds more like an act of expressing warmth and care for the person as opposed to a proper hug where you like wrap both your arms around each other and squeeze

obviously it depends on who the person is what kind of hug you give them and how well you know them, but I like big cuddly hugs

and a "proper hug" is something other than an expression of warmth and caring?
