How much money would a starting software engineer make in NYC?

What about in Baltimore or D.C.?

What is the growth potential for someone who's good?

Depends on the type of company.
If you get hired by a big insurance group, financial institution, accounting firm and you know what you're doing you can start with 70,000 - 90,000.
The sky's the limit, especially if you go into management.

How do you get into management? Just by being good at what you do, or is there something more?

DH would love to do that eventually and I think he'd be great at it.

I'm not a software engineer, but a programmer. I have a BA, no masters. I work for the federal government and make low 6 figures, but this is after working there for 19 years. I am not trying to go into being a project lead or management, or I could have gotten there quicker.
I don't know about private industry.

I know undergraduates with degrees in software engineering who are offered low six figures (between $100K and $150K) on graduation. Top 100 colleges (so not CUNY or Touro) but not Ivies either. But, are my kids interested in software engineering? No. Sigh.

I will also add that in all cases, these are kids who made sure to get themselves internships during their summers in college. That is crucial for getting hired by a company that pays well.
