Spin off is basically saying, "I was reading another thread and thought of this other topic but I didn't want to be disrespectful and hijack the first thread with my new topic"
That's you'll have a thread with the title "this is my thread" and then "s/o this is my thread" so ppl will know the second thread was inspired by the first.

You ever watch a TV show and then there's another show with some of the peripheral characters? That's the first time I ever heard spinoff. It's spins off the original. (E.g. All in the Family and The Jeffersons. Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley.)

Yes. Lots of times the spin off isn't successful. Joey from friends. Walter, trapper John MD, and after mash from mash.

ISO can also mean a file format used to make a backup of a CD, but it usually doesn't mean that on this site.
