Yoyos made a comeback.
I know people said this in the 80s but Lisa Frank stationary and stickers were still a big deal in the 90s. And trapper keepers too!
Those black patent leather clunky heel shoes... I forget what we called them or if they had a name.
That gooey stuff that came out of the 99c machines.
99c stores still sold things for 99c (not including tax lol)
The macarena
The Backstreet Boys
Britney Spears |
Lisa Frank stationary and stickers was definitely a 90s trend, the person who wrote it in the 80s thread was mistaken.
Brittany Spears, Christina Aguillera, Mandy Moore...that whole group of blonde teenage pop stars...
Leonardo DiCaprio was THE heart throb of the decade. Brad Pitt a close second.
Men's pants and suits were loose fitting, cargo pants were cool. Spaghetti strap denim jumpers, slip dresses with a choker necklace, Cargo skirts, Stevenson's, and XCavarichis....
Friends ruled the 90s and basically decided all the major fashion trends and hair styles, like the "Rachel," and the pixie cut.

Basketball was huge in the US because of Michael Jordan. Baseball had a bunch of role models in that decade, like Cal Ripkin.
We girls all loved figure skating, and during that decade the US women ruled...Kristy Yamaguchi, Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding attack, and Michelle Kwan!
The siyum Hashas got Huge, selling out Madison Square Gardens...
Artscroll started churning out English translations of sefarim, much to the anxiety of many a talmid chachom, who worried true limud would be lost if it was too easy...
The Jewish Observer's ground breaking issue on kids at risk...
On Shabbos everyone served salad with strawberries and nuts in it (it elwasnt until the early 2000s that nuts were deemed assur in all public gathering spaces due to rampant allergies)

My daughters never played the "a my name is..." We used to play that every recess.
We also played tons of clap in clap out games. Some of the songs were in hebrew and french. One of them was Rockin Robin.

Curly shoelaces
Shobbos food was definitely different, there was a thread here about that
Mini van doors that you had to swing shut with all your might in order to close.
Real meters that took quarters in ny and you could see the dial moving to zero as time ran out. |
My school too. We also kept pencil sharpenings. I never understood why my mother wasn't too fond of my "collections" 🤣.

We thought that the shreddies would turn into an eraser if we kept it in the freezer long enough!
And brain yoyos.
White tube socks with biz skirts (shirts tucked IN)
Twin sets, with a matching applique on the "shell" and sweater

The early Skechers sneakers, with the ridged soles ( hard to describe). Chunky high heels with an ankle strap.

Zig zag parts
Those stretchy plastic headbands that divided the hair into sections
Actually early 90s was very 80s carryover, big everything
Late 90s was sleeker.... Carried over into the 2000s
Glitter makeup, body sprays...

AOL Internet - “you’ve got mail!”
When you had to unplug your phone line and plug the wire into the computer to access the internet, so you couldn't use your phone and internet at the same time. And sometimes it took many tries to connect to AOL.

Remember purple and green heinz ketchup?!!?? |
Lol! I just recently told my kids about the purple and green ketchup and they totally thought I was making it up!
Also, I miss "string thing" fruit snack! It came in several flavors in a bunch of different designs.
Anyone remember the "torpedo" drinks? Yum!!
Also, dunkaroos! (Which actually made a comeback!!)
I remember when sour sticks first came out!
Also, there was a certain flavor super snack that they don't make anymore and it was really good!
Of course I only remember food

Beezus and Ramona books (although they are probably a lot older than we are), Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.
Ordering Scholastic books through the school every few months, on real order forms.
Sending away our camera films to be developed, and the pictures coming back some weeks later in purple and white envelopes (Clark company).
Trading Hi Beary stationery. There was a hierarchy- the plastic sheets were the most special. And then they came out with a mini series. I loved my stationery album! Getting nostalgic! |
I loved there bina gold mysteries!
