Where was this, op? I just took 2 teens for a well visit and I was the one filling everything out. I was in the room with them when they were being checked. I live in New Jersey.

Anything that streamlines medical care is good. I can't tell you how much more efficient my family's medical care is now that we live in Israel and almost any medical professional can pull up a whole history in an instant.

Also - sometimes teens have things they want to discuss with a doctor without mom in the room. It's not always about gender issues. Yes, it's hard to be excluded when you're paying and responsible for someone else's care, but seriously, can't you see a teenager wanting information from a doctor?

I find that disturbing. In nyc any doctor can pull up my child's vaccine record, I find that very unsettling even though my child is fully vaccinated. It's like there's too much tracking for my comfort.

I don't blame the mom. I would consider choosing a different practice rather then having my personal records on a national database.

Are you familiar with my chart? It's not a government thing and I can't think what's upsetting about it. Some of my doctors have been using it for years, it's just a way of streamlining things online. Like you can check in for your appointment, update address, and send messages to the doctor on your phone instead of all through the secretary on paper. What's disturbing?

Now once your kid is a teen the parents don’t have access to the info. The teen has to grant them permission every step of the way. That’s the law.

This is what's being told to the child who needs to sign the form. Feel free to draw your own conclusions as to what the purpose of this form is and if the average 12 year old has the emotional capacity to make such decisions (or if they even understand what they are signing)

(copied from the form I was given for my 12yo daughter in NJ. My access to her mychart account was removed until this form was signed) :

Adolescent Patient (12-17 Year Old):
I understand there is an electronic medical record with information about my (a 12–17-year-old patient’s) medical care and
treatment at Hackensack Meridian Health. I am aware that some of my medical information from this record can be looked at
through a secure website called Hackensack Meridian MyChart. I understand that the access for an adolescent patient like
myself will not include access to sensitive information as designated by my physician which may include information related to
s-xual orientation/gender identity, pregnancy, birth control, s-xually transmitted infections such as HIV or AIDS (HIV is the Human
Immunodeficiency Virus which is the virus that causes AIDS), mental health care, addiction treatment and genetic services.
• I want to give my parent(s) or guardian(s) permission to use MyChart to look at my medical information, including
information about my past, current and future care and treatment at Hackensack Meridian Health and affiliated facilities,
doctors and offices.
• I understand that while efforts will be made to block access to sensitive information, there is a risk that this permission
form may allow my parent(s)/guardian(s) to see all of my health care information that is in MyChart, including sensitive
information related to PREGNANCY, BIRTH CONTROL, and s-xually TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS such as
HIV or AIDS), MENTAL HEALTH, including addiction treatment such as ALCOHOL, DRUG USE or ABUSE OR
EATING DISORDER, GENETIC CONDITIONS,s-xual ORIENTATION/GENDER IDENTITY. I understand that after
my parent/guardian reviews my medical information, it could be disclosed to others and would no longer be protected
by federal privacy regulations.
• I understand that MyChart allows for confidential messaging. I can choose to send messages to my medical providers
and select the option that prohibits my parents(s)/guardian(s) from having the ability to view the messages.
• I know I do not have to sign this form or use MyChart, and I can still get treatment from Hackensack Meridian Health
and their doctors.
• I understand that I have the ability to cancel this access through my MyChart account. I understand that Hackensack
Meridian Health and my doctors can also cancel access to MyChart (for patients or their Proxies) at any time and for
any reason.
• I had a chance to ask questions about this permission form. Any questions I had were answered. If I choose to give my
permission now, I can change my mind and cancel this permission form later at any time.
• I understand when I turn 18 years old, this authorization will expire and re-enrollment will be required.

It is crazy. They are not deemed to have the legal capacity to open up a bank account, yet this they have capacity for?

A mother with her teen daughter was in the waiting room, probably for an annual physical. Receptionist was telling her she needs to register via MyChart, per the new office procedure. They had just told me the same thing. The lady made the biggest scene about how she is having none of it and it’s all a scheme to allow the kids to be exposed to propaganda from the doctor without the parents’ knowledge. I tried to tell her to calm down, advising her register her daughter using her (mom’s) email, her cellphone number, and then sign in and give permission for parent access (herself) but she was in such a hysterical tizzy, she was beyond talking to.
Her daughter is sitting right next to her and she will be in the exam room with her during the checkup. Her insurance will be billed for everything that comes up during the visit and potentially any future visits her daughter would have, as always. With the explanation of benefits mailed/emailed as always. Migrating to MyChart is a corporate decision by the practice. And seriously, the kid needing to give parent permission is a state thing. Please stop abusing the staff who have zero sway over these policies.

I don’t think any of that is your concern.

Some specialist have an online portal. I never "had" to use it, but it was helpful in getting the test results quickly.

Same. I have been going to the dentist myself since 4th grade.

Yep. Even if your kid gives you permission, if they're mad at you one day for being too much in their business, they can just go on and click it away.

I personally think the issue is that the office staff doesn’t make policy. The secretary makes, what, 50k a year. She’s just trying to do her job. Anyone who disagrees should reach out to elected officials. But taking it out on the secretary seems wrong to me

OMG!!!!!!!
Mychart has NOTHING to do with the government!
I have charts for my kids at ODA. They have no way to log in, bc they dont know the login info, and they dont have computer access.
What was this lady making a fuss about?
I have a mychart for myself and my husband at NYU. My husband has a Myconnect acct at Weill Cornell. It's been a LIFESAVER for me to see test results instantly.
That lady is pushet misinformed and doesnt chap what MyChart is. It has nothing to do with the 14 yr old daughter. She should have been the one to sign up for it, so that she would have the log-in info.

this is no different from her teen having her own cell phone or her own email address. If she's too young to have either of those, she's also too young to have her own MyChart. her mother shoudl be the one to log in. It's no biggie. So why was she going so crazy?

I wasn't there. But likely because she was told she couldn't access the info without her dd's permission, and she didn't know there was a workaround of just doing it herself and not saying anything. It's also possible that the office was planning to explain to the dd all about how she was now in charge of her own things, but OP said the dd wasn't at the desk, so clearly she didn't know that yet.

She should not have thrown a fit. But I can see why she would be upset.

I'm thinking you didn't actually read the OP.

This has nothing to do with the concept of mychart but rather what happens (in some doctors offices/medical conglomerates) when a child turns 12.

Did you see the excerpt from the form I posted above? That form is called "Hackensack meridian proxy minor form" and I was sent that when my child turned 12. Our pediatrician's office uses Epic (mychart) via Hackensack. The doctor's office didn't even know I was sent the form but once my daughter's birthday passed I was unable to access her mychart account (even to confirm an appointment) until the form was signed.

This has not carried over to my area. What states are dealing with this now?

I'm in NJ.

Now that you mention it I haven't had this experience (yet?!) with DD's providers at CHoP (Philadelphia)...
