How do you feel about accepting cash or generous gifts from obviously poor families?
Do you just accept? Do you try to return?

I would not try to return because that would be super uncomfortable and I feel a breach of boundaries - giving a gift is the other person's decision. But I would feel uncomfortable about the whole thing and hope very much that this was not something they felt they had to do but a choice they made in peace.

I'm a kindergarten teacher, have my own playgroup, and it makes me feel terrible when that happens. I always try to make it up. I'll send them a smaller bill for the next month's tuition and hope they don't notice.

And if it's a check I conveniently forget to cash it.
