I went to school in Virginia
The obvious destinations are Charlottesville as Monticello is beautiful and Williamsburg which is a fascinating recreation of colonial America.
Kids (or even adults) might be fascinated by a tour of Luray Caerns which are the largest caverns in the eastern US

I think there is a Busch gardens which is a big amusement park somewhere.
Virginia also has an extensive shoreline that is an option. And Skyline Drive runs along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains and it beautiful. I used to go there every Fall when the foliage was in full array
Richmond is a relatively large city which has various options - museums and the equivalent.
And of course you are passing through Washington DC which could easily interest people for a week given all there is to see there.
Really depends on your interests and what your family is interested in.
