I grew up OOT. We currently live in a large OOT but for various reasons, including expensive housing, want to move.
Musts:
Relatively cheap housing
Good schools
Jewish infrastructure (I don’t need a lot of stores but I can have no stores or no pizza store etc. I don’t want a hole in the wall in the middle of nowhere)
Nice community feel
I’d love for it to be drivable to NY.
Kollel/kiruv options.
I would even consider within NY itself as long as it’s an OOT.
We’re OOT yeshivish
Ideas?
Edited to add that I’d love young families

Yes. I know yeshivish people that live there with young families and it is driving distance to NY/NJ.
I'm sorry I posted too quickly without verifying if there's affordable housing there.

My SIL lives there and according to her there is plenty of affordable housing- but if you are looking for a mansion Philly is not the place.

Baltimore comes to mind as a great option. Waterbury could also work.

What kind of community?
I’d love if people would offer details about the places they’re suggesting!

Highland Park/ Edison (one eruv) is a mixed community (MO, yeshivish etc). With most yeshivish people living on the Edison side. Multiple shuls. Cohesive community.
East Brunswick is a few minute drive away. Cheaper, larger houses, one shul (plus one kiruv shul) . Leans more MO.

In all of these places, are the people ‘in town’ or ‘oot’? Meaning- is there an emphasis on gashmiyus and having what everyone else has?
When people live in small communities in the tri state area and send their kids to in town school are they getting that oot mindset?

Depends.
East Brunswick is very oot in outlook (no bugaboo strollers outside the shul etc). Because it is a one shul town, there are people who make $20,000 a year and $20,000 a month (or more), all in the same place. No one cares.
HP/ Edison is more of a mix.

there are a few threads here about it already you can search or ask specific questions here..
waterbury is about 2 hours from Brooklyn 1 1/2 hours to monsey.
houses start in the 200s.
preschool to 12th grade 1 options each for boys and girls
multiple kollel options
1 grocery/ pizza/ deli/sushi store.
really nice mix along the yeshivish spectrum from very lite to long term kollel/ chinuch.
a lot of people from Brooklyn, still fancy/stylish but quite a lot shop completely at target/ clearance sales..
with exceptions, overall not very gashmius and competitive.
any specific questions?

It’s honestly so hard narrowing it down.
Cleveland
Baltimore
Maybe Cincinnati (although not so drivable)
Maybe Passaic
Waterbury
Others mentioned above

Is Cherry Hill, NJ an option? A lot of new families juts moved in and many had a hard time finding housing but other than that it's a great community!
