I know imamother skews young, but does anyone remember the Russian submarine Kursk? All 118 men aboard died. The government tried to claim that they died quickly, but that was not the case.
One of the officers, Dmitry Kolesnikov, a newlywed, wrote a letter in his last few hours of life. On one side of the paper he documented the final events aboard the submarine, on the other side he wrote his wife a letter. The letter was found in his pocket when his body was retrieved.
There was a lot about the leadup to the disaster and the aftermath that enraged people. Such a waste of young lives.
For anyone here who speaks Russian, the Russian band DDT had a moving, angry song about it, video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u6EdiESzq8
For everyone else, an English translation of the lyrics (got the link from Professor Eugene Volokh's blog post): https://lyricstranslate.com/en......html

The only Russian submarine disaster that I remember is the one were a Russian submarine was in the Caribbean and their air conditioner blew. They were rescued by the Coast Guard suffering from heat strokes.

I can't believe the Kurtzk was 23 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. And the Dakar in 1968 and, vaguely, the Thresher in 1963. So much so that when I visited the Intrepid Museum I was a little weirded out entering the dry-docked sub.

I remember something vaguely. Will have to read up on it. I'm over 30 so should remember a little but I thought it's something that happened 10 years ago not 23!
