Not sure if anyone else has had any similar situation, but considering the wide audience I thought I'd throw this out there--we're planning to ask the shaila, but thought I'd ask anyway. We've had ongoing discussions about names we'd use for our children iy"H, and as it happens there's a name that was my grandfather, my greatgrandfather (diff sides), and another grandfather with a "yiddish" version of that name which we can't use the regular name for other reasons. Anyway, my DH is a baal teshuva and assumed his hebrew name is "xxx yyy" (actual name is not important). He is aware that he was named "after someone", not religious either, but he found a "bris certificate" when he was older that said his name was "zzz xxx" (the y & z names have the same shoresh, but are different names). He was told that since he has always gone by "xxx yyy" that is his name. The problem is that "zzz"--by itself is the name I want to use. We are not sefardi. DH's mother is no longer living unfortunately, father is not religious--may not remember accurately, grandparents may not remember either. Is "zzz" out for us as a name?
