I don't watch English movies or listen to English radios, so I don't 'hear' the words..
I see it, learn the meaning of the word, but I pronounce it the way they're spelled Can't Believe It

That is a very common “problem” among the intelligent and well-read!
Nothing to be ashamed of!

We’ve had threads before about words people mispronounced before they learned the “real” pronunciation.

Mine was “awry” - I said it like “AWE-ree” instead of “uh-RYE”. embarrassed

I wonder if accents come to play here as well. Sometimes Google pronounces thing different than what usually the standard way of saying words.

Words that most English speakers come across pretty early and just memorize as “irregular exceptions”, but make me sooo happy that I don’t have to learn this crazy language as an adult:

Epitome
Anemone
Hyperbole
Choir
Colonel
Segue
Respite (doesn’t rhyme with “despite”)

I had a teacher in school read us a story about a colonel and she mispronounced it every time LOL

On a similar note, my sister's teacher taught her class a states song with Arkansas and Illinois

All except Worcestershire. I’ve never heard it said out loud so I don’t know how to say. Isthmus I’ve never heard , but I’m pretty sure I know how to pronounce it. Is the th silent?

How would we know if our pronunciation is correct?

I mean, don’t we generally thing our pronunciation is correct? If I didn’t already know, for example, that colonel is pronounced kernel, and you asked if I could pronounce it, I would say yes even if I was reading it caw-law-nel.

I think about this often. I was raised listening to the radio, so I generally know how to pronounce things. But my kids never listen to the radio or anything like that. They are big readers and know lots of words, but not necessarily how to pronounce them. I try to use and pronounce hard words in their hearing, and correct their mispronunciations, but there will probably always be things they mispronounce. I guess it's a tradeoff.

All but one - what’s isthmus (or do I just not know how it’s pronounced)?
