I was a grown up with a BA and an MA and traveling for a great job in high tech.
I was on business in California for the week and I had to work until late on Friday so I was staying for Shabbat. I had contacted the OU for a place to stay for Shabbat nearby. I knew I was near my exit but all I saw were exits for La Jolla and I knew I needed "La Hoya". Though I was alone I was soooo embarrassed when I started thinking out sounds in Spanish and figured it out. I had already passed two of the three La Jolla exits of the highway. I still cringe when I think about that.

I make gnocchi every so often and I have to enunciate clearly when my kids ask me what's for dinner or they (well, really just the little one) think I'm saying "yucky" instead.

I did a lot of SAT word prep in high school so I learned pronounciations of a lot of random words. My father a"h was very into languages and latin so taught me the importance of root words. One that tripped me up and I found funny when I learned was that "idict" had the same root as "Indicate", I used to think the word was "idight"

DH spends a few weeks yearly in Delhi, NY and it's amusing when friends and family (attempt to) correct his pronunciation of the name based on their familiarity with the location in India.

at least you don't call it GaNAHKey, not to be confused with ganache.

Which is pronounced gaNAHsh. Rhymes with A Nosh.

Well, if we're going to talk about words we don't know how to pronounce...it took me months to work up the courage to ask my mother how to pronounce the surname of the couple down the hall, spelled (wait for it) ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................F-U-C-H-S.
