Yes kids were hit back in the day. Boys were hit in school with belts and sticks. Even girls were hit in school with sticks. Father hit their children with belts & mothers hit with hands.
Bh we've come a long way.

My father reminisces about the wooden paddle that hung his principal’s office.. I’m pretty sure his father threatened him with his belt as well.
My father adored his father and they had a wonderful relationship. This was how they disciplined back then.

In the early 1900’s the kids got hit on the fingers with a wooden paddle as a means of discipline.
Most parents I knew would administer an occasional potch.

Hitting, spanking, corporal punishment were very common in the 1800's, 1700's.... you gotta read up a bit.

I can't resist sharing a quote from Astrid Lindgren:

"When I was about 20 years old, I met an old pastor's wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn't believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. But one day when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking--the first of his life.
